Already being one of the largest airlines at New York’s JFK International Airport, JetBlue is looking to pave the way for future growth.

JetBlue recently selected RXR Realty and Vantage Airport Group to guide its effort to redevelop the defunct Terminal 6, which is the carrier’s original home at JFK and even the adjacent Terminal 7. If this project is successful, it will enable JetBlue to cooperate more directly with its international airline partners, while giving space for expanding its own operations if the FAA relaxes JFK Airport’s slot controls.

Nearly a decade ago JetBlue opened its new Terminal 5 facility at JFK Airport nearly a decade ago. Terminal 5 is spacious and modern, whereas its previous home Terminal 6 was cramped and outdated. Terminal 6 was demolished after the opening of T5. However, JetBlue employed an exclusive right to redevelop that site.

JetBlue, RXR Realty, and Vantage Airport Group still need to get the approval from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, to go ahead with any plan for development. The Port Authority is looking to expand the airport’s capacity as quickly as possible while also encouraging greater integration between the terminals to improve the experience of passengers.
